The Arctic Winter Games are a celebration of athletic competition, culture, friendship and cooperation between northern contingents. Athletic competition features sports that enjoy worldwide popularity alongside traditional Arctic Sports and Dene Games. A significant cultural component featuring visual arts, dance, ceremonies and galas with participants from across the circumpolar region is a pillar of the Games.

Whitehorse was chosen to host the 2012 Arctic Winter Games by the Arctic Winter Games International Committee. The committee is tasked with selecting the host cities, setting the strategic direction for the games, and awards the Hodgson Trophy to the contingent whose athletes best exemplify the ideals of fair play and team spirit.

 Athlete Selection Process

1. Goals of team selection

Basketball NWT wants to ensure that the NWT is well represented in the sport of basketball at the 2012 AWGs, and to ensure that opportunities are provided for athletes from across the NWT to be selected as a member of the Team NWT. The goal is to have teams be competitive, play cohesively and display good sportsmanship. Basketball NWT believes that these goals can be attained by selecting athletes that are physically fit and technically skilled and display the appropriate attitudinal qualities.

 2. Eligibility to be considered for team selection

Athletes must meet the eligibility requirements specified in the Team NWT - General Rules for the 2012 AWGs (see http://www.sportnorth.com/). Athletes must be born in 1993 or later. Athletes participating in Post Secondary school basketball programs are ineligible.

 3. General scheme

At the Territorial Selection Camp, an evaluation committee composed of the AWG coach and a three evaluators will grade each athlete with 1 point for weak, 2 points for fair, 3 points for OK, 4 points for good and 5 points for talented. The categories being graded include shooting, passing, dribbling, rebounding, offensive knowledge, defensive knowledge and general info including strength, jumping ability, leadership

The 11th and 12th ranked athletes will be designated as alternates. These athletes will be added to the roster if one or more of the original team members are removed from the roster prior to the AWG competition.

 4. Criteria for selection according to the scheme

 See attached evaluation form

 5. Who makes the selection decision?

A selection committee composed of the AWG coach and three members of the Basketball NWT board will act as evaluators at the Territorial Selection Camp. President of Basketball NWT will select the third evaluator. Parents of athletes involved in the trials or other individuals deemed by Basketball NWT to have a vested interest in the selection process shall not be eligible to be evaluators.

 6. Requirements to remain selected

To remain selected, the following is required:

  • the athlete must remain in good standing with Basketball NWT;

  • the athlete must meet the expectations and code of conduct as outlined by the Head Coach and approved by the Basketball NWT

Failure to meet these requirements will result in removal from the roster.

 7. Notification of Selection

Athletes will be advised of whether they were selected as a team member or alternate at the end of the camp in person. All athletes will be provided with direct feedback on their performance while at the camp from all evaluators. Sport North representatives will provide information on the requirements of athletes selected to represent team NWT at the 2012 Arctic Winter Games. Alternates may be included in any training or competitions taking place prior to the Games so that they are prepared if called upon.
